IPTVX M3U Setup Guide: Adding Playlists, Formats & External EPG

The M3U format is the most widely recognized playlist standard across digital video streaming. While Xtream Codes API is preferred for automatic metadata, M3U playlists offer complete portability across any video player in existence. In this guide, we explain how IPTVX parses M3U files and how to configure custom EPG schedules alongside your playlist.

1. What is an M3U Playlist?

An M3U file is a plain-text document structured with `#EXTM3U` and `#EXTINF` header directives. Extended M3U files (M3U Plus) embed metadata tags such as `tvg-id`, `tvg-name`, `tvg-logo`, and `group-title`. IPTVX reads these directives to sort channels into categories and render channel station logos.

2. Adding an M3U URL to IPTVX

• Step 1: Launch IPTVX and click "Add Playlist".
• Step 2: Choose "M3U Playlist / URL".
• Step 3: Enter a descriptive name for your playlist.
• Step 4: Paste your complete M3U URL (e.g., http://server.com:8080/get.php?username=...&password=...&type=m3u_plus&output=ts).
• Step 5: Click Save. Allow IPTVX to download the channel index.

3. Linking External XMLTV EPG

Because M3U files do not always bundle program schedules, you should attach an external XMLTV EPG link. In IPTVX Settings > Playlists > edit your M3U playlist, and paste your XMLTV URL into the "EPG URL" box. IPTVX will match channel `tvg-id` tags with program guide data automatically.

4. Optimizing Large Playlists (20,000+ Streams)

If your playlist contains over 40,000 live feeds and on-demand movies, it can slow down initial indexing on lower-spec hardware like older Apple TVs or Firesticks. You can request your provider to filter out international channel bouquets you do not watch, resulting in a lean, instantaneous playlist.

5. Reloading & Refreshing Cached Channels

To refresh your channel lineup with new additions, navigate to IPTVX Settings > Playlists, highlight your M3U profile, and click "Reload Playlist".
